From Rome to London
Our story began with the inaugural Data Research workshop in 2023, where Lauren Waardenburg and Cristina Alaimo envisioned creating a community called TheorizingAI. The aim was to provide a dedicated space for discussion among scholars exploring the technical, organizational, social, and institutional implications of artificial intelligence. This vision became a reality later that same year, with the first annual conference held in Rome.
Since that first meeting in 2023, our community has steadily grown each year, bringing together scholars from a wide range of disciplines who share a common interest in advancing the foundations of a social science for the study of artificial intelligence. In 2025, the community was renamed Theorizing Data and AI (TheorizingDAI), reflecting the growing recognition of the central role of data in understanding contemporary technologies and their impact on organizations and society.
Following annual workshops held in Rome, Cergy, Amsterdam, and London, TheorizingDAI continues to grow as a key reference point for researchers engaged in the social study of technology. The community has developed a more complex and structured organization, including an organizing committee, a scientific committee, and a network of collaborators who continuously support the achievement of its objectives.
