About the Conference

In 2025, TheorizingAI rebranded itself as Theorizing Data and AI (TheorizingDAI) to reflect the growing interest within the community in the primary importance of data in the understanding of AI technologies and their impact on organizations and societies. This change was also inspired by the award-winning book Data Rules: Reinventing the Market Economy co-authored by Cristina Alaimo and Jannis Kallinikos.

This year, the conference took place in Amsterdam and was hosted at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam with the support of the KIN Center of Digital Innovation. The new conference reflected an increase in participation, with 79 submissions compared to 58 in the previous year.

The keynote speakers for this annual meeting included Ella Hafermalz, Youngjin Yoo, Mike Power, and Lauren Waardenburg. Together, they addressed a range of relevant topics, reflecting a maturation of the community debate on the understanding of AI technologies. These topics included the discussion of AI technologies as semantic machines, their relationship with and impact on human rationality, an examination of the meaning of data and of the process of datafication pervading societies and organizations, and the societal and organizational consequences of predictive systems and their performance evaluation.
